Empowered to take to the streets and document their lives, 5 students from Life Learning Academy created a body of photography work that will be exhibited in a show at the Haus of Hipstamatic this Friday, February 28th. You can join the event for a Happy Hour from 6 to 8pm! There will be drinks, music by DJ Phillyberg, and the gallery show entitled #WeHearYouSF. “If you could tell the world anything, what would you say?” is the premise under which the students, ages 15 to 18, set out to share with us their perspectives on life with Hipstamatic’s photo app Oggl. With a little guidance by local photojournalism professionals, who assisted them through the process through mentorship, they are now proud to present to you what they created. Life Learning Academy is a charter school on Treasure Island that offers students a second chance with the goal to keep them in school and off the streets. “When I was younger I witnessed things no kid should see. It took me getting locked up to change my lifestyle,” said 18-year-old Demond. “One day I was in court and the judge called me a ‘menace to society.’ She told me I had two sides of me, and that it’s up to me to decide what kind of guy I want to be.” Demond and the other students will be at the event and you can directly talk to them about their experiences with this project.
