Fashion for Good
A San Francisco Fashion Institution rooted in Good Will
Many young women today may not know about a multigenerational effort started in 1901 by a woman in New York named Mary Harriman Rumsey—championing civic leadership, voluntarism, and philanthropy, all aimed at developing the potential of young women to aid in improving their communities and lending a hand to those in need. Unlike Lady Mary of Downton, Mary Harriman Rumsey has always seen the role of women in society far bigger than what was expected of them at the time. This effort spearheaded by a railroad executive still does immense good in cities all across America—like San Francisco's chapter of the Junior League.
Founded in 1911, the Junior League of San Francisco—2000 women strong in the Bay Area has been fundraising, volunteering, and supporting great causes for the advancement of women for over a century. Each year, it hosts a Fashion Show Gala, now in its 88th year, to raise funds for the innumerable causes the organization supports. The event is a combination of silent auctions, cocktail hour and gourmet food, and a fashion show, all for the love of philantrophy. Though one might envision the group as a socialite club—as perhaps it was in its infancy—Its contribution to society are undeniable, and it's hard to argue with the results of the organization's results having raised over $24 Million since its inception (not counting inflation) and over 6 million hours of volunteerism, and such notable members of the Junior League's history in the U.S., like Eleanor Roosevelt and Sandra Day O'Connor.
